Hospitality and hotel staff are urgently needed in Germany, yet your application still decides whether you get the best job or just any job. A clear, honest and well-prepared hospitality job application will quickly convince employers. Here are the most important tips.
1. Your CV: short, clear, specific
- Two pages maximum, in table form, with the most recent jobs first
- Specific details: name and type of business, position, dates, main duties
- Use numbers: number of rooms, seats, covers or team size
- Languages with levels: for example German B1, English B2, Italian native
- Certificates: HACCP, bar courses, sommelier, driving licence
- A friendly, professional photo is common in Germany but not required
2. The cover letter: personal, not generic
Many hospitality businesses care less about long cover letters. Three to five sentences are often enough: who you are, which job you want, what you offer and when you can start. Mention the hotel or restaurant by name – it shows genuine interest.
3. The interview
Interviews often take place on site, by phone or by video. Typical questions include:
- Why do you want to work here?
- How do you handle stress during service?
- How do you react to an unhappy guest?
- Which working hours can you do?
Prepare your own questions too: What does the rota look like? How are tips shared? Is accommodation available? How long is the probation period?
4. The trial shift: your chance to show what you can do
Trial shifts are common in hospitality. Arrive on time with clean work clothes and, if you are a chef, your own knives. Work attentively, ask when something is unclear and show team spirit. Often it is not only your technique that decides, but how well you fit in with the team.
5. Check before you accept
- A written employment contract stating salary, hours, holidays and probation
- Clear arrangements for accommodation and its cost
- Registration with social insurance
