The barista
The barista is a coffee specialist. They operate the espresso machine, adjust the grind, steam milk for cappuccinos and lattes, create latte art and advise guests on beans and brewing methods. In many cafés tea, cold drinks and small snacks are part of the job too.

A bistro kitchen works with a small menu: breakfast, soups, salads, pasta, daily specials and homemade cakes. Cooks have plenty of freedom with daily dishes and often work closely with the owner – ideal for cooks who value variety and responsibility.

Working hours
Cafés open early and often close in the late afternoon or early evening. Bistros often have all-day hours but less night work than bars or restaurants. Part-time and mini-jobs are common – ideal for students or as a second job. Tipping is customary here too.
Career
Experienced baristas become head barista or café manager, or move into coffee roasting or hospitality consulting. Bistro service staff and cooks are valued in hotels and larger restaurants for their versatility.
