Why Italian restaurants are always hiring
German hospitality has faced a shortage of skilled workers for years. Italian restaurants also need people who know the products, recipes and pace of a real Italian kitchen: wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta, antipasti and desserts like tiramisu or panna cotta. Experience in this kind of kitchen is highly valued.
Roles in an Italian restaurant
- Pizza chef (Pizzaiolo) – one of the most wanted roles, especially with wood-fired oven experience.
- Cook / head chef – pasta, meat, fish, sauces and running the kitchen.
- Kitchen assistant – prep, cleaning, dishwashing; a good start with little experience.
- Waiter / Chef de Rang – table service, wine recommendations, guest contact.
- Bartender – espresso, cocktails, Italian aperitifs.
- Gelateria staff – mainly in the summer season.
What employers usually ask for
Every employer is different, but the most common requirements are:
- hospitality experience (for cooks and pizza chefs);
- basic Italian or German – many Italian kitchens speak Italian;
- reliability, punctuality and team spirit;
- the mandatory food hygiene briefing (Belehrung nach § 43 IfSG) at the local health office before working with food.
Pay and conditions
Germany’s statutory minimum wage is €13.90 gross per hour in 2026, rising to €14.60 in 2027. Experienced cooks and pizza chefs usually earn more, depending on the city, the restaurant and the hours. In many cases the employer also helps find housing near the workplace.
