Behind every spotless hotel room is a well-organised department, led by the executive housekeeper and housekeeping supervisors. They plan, inspect and lead the team so that dozens or hundreds of rooms are ready on time and to a consistent standard every day. Experienced housekeeping leaders are in high demand in Germany.
The housekeeping hierarchy
- Executive housekeeper: head of the entire department
- Assistant housekeeper / floor supervisor: deputy and inspector of individual floors
- Housekeeping supervisor / team leader: leads a team on shift
- Room attendants: clean and prepare rooms
- Public area cleaning and laundry
Duties of a housekeeping supervisor
- Allocating rooms to the team based on the occupancy list
- Inspecting cleaned rooms and releasing them to reception
- Onboarding and training new staff
- Ordering supplies and managing linen and storage
- Communicating with reception and maintenance
- Handling guest requests and lost property
Duties of the executive housekeeper
The executive housekeeper is also responsible for staff planning, budget, purchasing cleaning products and linen, quality standards and working with external contractors. They are part of the management team and usually report to the rooms division manager or directly to the hotel director.
What is expected?
- Several years of hotel housekeeping experience
- Leadership and organisational skills
- A sharp eye for cleanliness and detail
- Good German for planning and communication
- Knowledge of hotel software and housekeeping apps is an advantage
Working hours and benefits
Work is mostly during the day, with weekends and holidays on a rota. Housekeeping leaders earn more than room attendants and often have regular hours – a plus compared with other hotel departments.
