A freshly made bed, a sparkling bathroom, everything in its place: whether guests feel at home in a hotel is largely decided in the room. That is why housekeeping is one of the most important departments, and room attendants are among the most sought-after staff in German hotels.
Duties in the room
- Making beds and changing linen to hotel standards
- Cleaning bathroom, toilet, shower and mirrors
- Vacuuming, mopping and dusting
- Restocking towels, toiletries and supplies
- Checking the minibar and reporting damage to maintenance
- Preparing the housekeeping trolley and keeping the floor store tidy
Departure and stay-over rooms
Housekeeping distinguishes between departure rooms, which are fully cleaned for the next guest, and stay-over rooms, where the guest is still staying and the room is refreshed daily. Departure rooms take longer; in stay-over rooms, discretion and respect for guests’ belongings are especially important.
What do you need for the job?
No formal training is required. Hotels look for thoroughness, reliability, honesty and physical stamina. German helps, but housekeeping teams are often international and training works with few words and lots of showing. If you work cleanly and quickly, you will learn the standards within days.
Working hours and conditions
Housekeeping mostly works during the day, usually from morning to early afternoon, and night shifts are rare. Many hotels offer full- and part-time positions, staff meals and often accommodation for staff from abroad. Make sure you are paid by the hour, not just by the number of rooms cleaned.

- Always work in the same order – it saves time and nothing gets forgotten.
- Protect your back when making beds.
- Report defects immediately to avoid complaints.
- Always hand lost property to the housekeeper and record it.
Promotion prospects
With experience you can become a team leader, floor supervisor or housekeeping supervisor, and later run an entire department as executive housekeeper.
