Together with porters and bellboys, the concierge is the figurehead of a luxury hotel. Upscale city and resort hotels in Germany regularly look for staff for these special roles.
Concierge duties
- Personal recommendations for restaurants, culture, shopping and excursions
- Booking tables, tickets, limousines and tours
- Organising special requests – birthday surprises, proposals, business meetings
- Maintaining a network of restaurants, event organisers and service providers
- Discreetly looking after VIP guests
Porter and bellboy duties
- Welcoming guests at the entrance and helping them out of their car
- Taking luggage to rooms and down again at departure
- Luggage storage and valet parking
- A short introduction to the room and hotel facilities
- Errands and deliveries within the hotel
What makes a good concierge?
A concierge knows the city inside out and has a large network. They speak several languages – German and English are a must and every additional language is a big advantage. Discretion, creative problem solving and an impeccable appearance are essential. Many concierges worked at reception first, and membership of the international concierge association, known for its golden keys, is a career goal for many.
Starting as a bellboy or porter
No formal training is needed for bellboys and porters. Friendliness, punctuality, physical fitness and a neat appearance count. The role is an ideal entry into luxury hotels: you learn the standards, guests and routines and can move up to receptionist or concierge.
Pay and working hours
Work is in shifts, including weekends. Alongside the salary, tips play an important role in these positions – satisfied guests are generous. Luxury hotels often provide extras such as uniforms, staff meals and training.
